Do uterine fibroids burst?

Noticed that many are conducting searches with the phrase “fibroids burst” or “bursting fibroids”.

From Mayo Clinic – Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids develop from the smooth muscular tissue of the uterus (myometrium). A single cell reproduces repeatedly, eventually creating a pale, firm, rubbery mass distinct from neighboring tissue. Fibroids range in size from seedlings, undetectable by the human eye, to bulky masses that can distort and enlarge the uterus. They can be single or multiple, in extreme cases expanding the uterus so much that it reaches the rib cage.

Fibroids may cause a gushing flow, the passage of large clots, and severe cramps. Because they are firm, fibroids can not burst. This Wikipedia link contains a picture of a uterine fibroid (leiomyoma) showing that it is rubbery but solid.

Read a few of my thoughts on blood and clots and cramps.

Have you ever had a “bursting” experience (lots of blood, large clots)? Leave a comment with your thoughts or questions.

  1. Leslie Bachman Says:

I am 51 years old and have had uterine fibroids for several years. I have always had heavy bleeding and long cycles but things started getting worse with large blood clots that were very scary. I did not want to have a hysterectomy so I requested that my OB/GYN prescribe a medication that I saw advertised on TV about 3 or 4 years ago. It is called Lysteda (now in generic form called Tranexamic Acid) – 650 mg. My periods are still heavy but manageable with no more clots! I think the medication was originally prescribed for people with hemophilia. You take 2 pills, 3 times a day for 5 days during your period. The surprising thing to me is that doctors (especially gynocologists) either do not know about this or would rather perform hysterectomies since they make more $ from this. As long as my family doctor says it’s safe, I will bide my time with Lysteda until menopause kicks in. The fibroids should shrink after menopause when my estrogen level drops. I would recommend anyone to talk to their doctor about Lysteda. The drug company has a website for information on the drug and its side effects – Lysteda.com . I have not had any side effects at all. I hope this helps many of you ladies who are suffering from the symptoms of fibroids!

Here is an interesting case of a subserosal fibroid which during gestation died but maintained exterior integrity and filled with water acting like a cyst. (called a cystic uterine fibroid)In this case the penduculated cystic fibroid was drained with a to reduce pain and in concern for strangulation or bursting.

My sister was diagnosed with an uterine fibroids 6.7 Cms of size and she was in much pain. The doctors advised her to have surgery but it is something that she was not in favour of and she cannot afford the costs. However the natural approach was of big help to us and her pain has reduced very much after a week.

    • Leslie Bachmabn Says:

      What is the “natural approach?”

Hi I’m a 51yr and 5 days ago I had a uterine fibroid rupture. It is and was a very painful experience after having an ablation over 2 yrs ago because of fibroids and very heavy periods. I thought I was done with having to deal with fibroids I was so wrong. I guess its rare to have one rupture but they didn’t seem to surprised at the ER after they found out what was causing my pain. Since the fibroid is filled with fluid and blood that the body will pass or absorb the only thing my DR’s were worried about was an infection caused by the rupture. They did blood work found no infection was good news for all of us meant no hospital stay for me. I was given something for the pain and release with pain medication to take home. I was told that it would take a few days for pain to subside plus to not do to much. Make an follow appointment with my gyn dr.

    • Amy Says:

Hello I just turned 50 and was diagnosed with a uterine fibroid a couple of years ago , at that time the dr. said it is so small don’t even worry about it . well, just in the last couple of weeks I had that sharp stabbing pain right there where the fibroid is at it was so painful and tender I couldn’t even sleep or lay on that side. Then last Friday after I rode my bike I noticed a little bleeding and thought I was spotting again like I been doing in the past, All of the sudden I got this warm sensation and I could feel a big gush of blood. I ended up saturating a tampon every i5 mins with huge clots. The weird thing about it is even though I had severe cramps my right sided sharp pain was relieved. Wonder if this fibroid ruptured I was bleeding so much I couldn’t go to work that day my job allows me to sit, but I can’t be getting up and going to the bathroom every 15 mins to change a tampon. I go back Monday but I am afraid to exercise again , thinking this would stir it up again and start gushing again . . . . can anyone relate ???

      • Terry Says:

Wow – that’s the same thing that happened to me yesterday. I had been having issues and have a biopsy planned for tomorrow morning. I kept calling the dr to tell them I was in the bathroom every 15 minutes but they never called back. All of a sudden (sitting at work) I got the worst cramp (in the bladder area) like something snapped. Then I barely made it to the bathroom where the warm gush of blood filled the toilet. It felt like I was having a baby. Later that night and so far today I’m fine. No bleeding anymore.

I guess I will keep the biopsy tomorrow since the dr never called. But I would love to know why that happened.

      • Julienne Says:

I had this happen to me in February. My bleeding and clots lasted for about 10 days. The last 4 I was going to the restroom every 10-15 min and one day I was on my way to school and I felt a rushing sensation. I filled a super pad in less than 5 minutes. I went straight to the ER. They gave me a hormone to stop the bleeding which took another 4-5 days but I still had heavy bleeding the first 2-3 days while taking the medicine. I ended up resorting to wearing depends with a super sized pad inside so I wasn’t having to go to the restroom constantly as I’m a student and I’m on my feet in a hospital all day long training. It was very uncomfortable but it worked. Hope this helped a little with a not so comfortable but workable solution.

      • Laura Says:

This happend to me and I am 26 and have pcos. I don’t know what caused this but it is word for wordering what happend to me. I was sitting on my couch when it felt like I had to pee and a warm sensation hit in 5 seconds I felt some thing burst. I ran to the bathroom. It was like a war zone. Clots everywhere and my cushion was bloody from the 2 seconds I was sitting there.

I dk what this is bUT if I get to the doctors, I will post about what it was

    • Holly Says:

Me too. I had a momentary sharp pain in my left. I made a doc appointment and had a pap, exam, blood work. They found my uterus was enlarged, solid mass maybe 6 cm. Other firm areas in the uterus. Set up more testing. The next day I had extreme pain worse then I’ve ever felt and I have had two children naturally. This was like a T-Rex bit my whole left side off then painful pressure like a balloon was going to keep filling up until it burst. This all lasted two hours. Then pain would come and go. I then went to the er and they did an internal ultra sound then a cat scan revealing two fibroids 1- 6cm in the center of my uterus and 1- 4 cm on my right. Not much on my left… were all the pain was.
Since then I had talked to another person that had fibroids also
She described what happened when she had one burst… it was the same for me. Then it was gone… I can’t find any medical proof to support this…most info I find says fibroids can not burst… I have no other way to explain what I felt…
I am going to an obgyn soon…

      • mommahash Says:

Too many of use are experiencing ruptures for it not to be so. Once they burst and absorb there is no evidence. More research needs to be done!
I also had natural child birth and agree that the rupture was MUCH more painful.
I did find a site that said they could burst if they were pedunculated and got twisted and lost their blood supply, causing them to fill with liquid.
Good luck/ I wish you all the best.

  5. Julie Romero Says:

My fibroids burt yesterday at 930 am ct. I have bleed for 12 hours. After half day have no blood. Fibroids burst supsersalors. Now the numbness went from my woman organs up to rib cage. It is numb now.
I hope I will be ok. I am tender on my chest and neasuous. Feel bit weak.

  6. Sharon Says:

I was diagnosed with multiple uterine fibroids in April 2015, the largest being 2.5 cm. On June 1st a D&C was scheduled for June 12th. On June 4th I ended up in the ER with my uterus the size of 7 to 8 months gestation. They said I had rapid growth fibroids. 17 hours later something ruptured and my uterus went from 2 inches below my rib cage to about 3 inches below my belly button in less than 10 minutes. The rupture was pure AGONY, the worst pain I have ever felt (I have had 2 natural births) and left several burning hot spots throughout my abdomen. The pain eased up rather quickly with the help of pain meds but my uterus was still enlarged and tender. Due to other issues, the D&C was postponed until July 30th and all the Dr found was one 1cm fibroid.
She told me that fibroids can’t rupture which makes sense because they are solid masses but when I asked her what did rupture she nonchalantly said,”I don’t know”. This did not and still doesn’t settle well with me.

    1. Something inside my abdomen ruptured and caused extreme pain. If it wasn’t a fibroid then what was it and does it need to be treated to prevent a recurrence?

    2. Immediately after the rupture, all bleeding stopped. The only discharge was a black gritty substance for 4 days and then 3 days of dark, old blood.

    3. 5 days after the rupture, my right leg went numb and the my right arm. After a 2 hour nap my neck and lips swelled to triple their size and my ears were popping. You could feel bubbles in my neck and the taste in my mouth was indescribable.. A nurse said it was the infection working it’s way through my system but my Gynecologist said it wasn’t related to female issues and referred me back to my GP who also said it was a gynecological issue from the fibroid rupturing.

    4. What happened to those “multiple” fibroids that showed up on the ultrasound? I felt small pops and burns throughout this entire ordeal. It seems to me that that was the smaller ones bursting.

By the time I had the D&C the pain had decreased to tolerable discomfort unless I sat up for extended periods. The D&C did not help this at all but I am relieved to say that after 10 days of doxycycline things are back to normal and I am pain free.

I still have no answers as to what happened inside my body and am fearful that it could reoccur but, for the time being, I am grateful that it is over!!!!

  7. atene Says:

You should have gone to the ER. Hope you do if it ever happens again.

  8. mommahash Says:

I did go to the ER and called my doctor. All they did was give me pain meds and tell me to wait for the D&C which was scheduled for 7 days later and then rescheduled for 6 WEEKS later. I assure you that I will never go back to that doctor or hospital again.
I pray that, now that I am menopausal, there will not be any recurrence. It was truly the scariest and most painful thing I have ever experienced.
I only shared my story in hopes of helping other women that are having similar experiences. There is very little information on the medical sites and only 3 similar cases on here.

  9. Helen Says:

I am 45 and have had fibroids for many years along with extremely heavy, painful periods all my life. Last august I had my tubes tied and an ablation as was suffering from virtually constant bleeding. Over this past week I’ve had period like pains and moments where I feel like I’ve wet myself. Running to the toilet thinking maybe I’ve flooded with bleeding again, I discover its clear liquid. I thought I’d lost complete control of my bladder, but my mum had the same thing happen to her approaching menopause and her doctor told her it was a burst fibroid cyst. Has anyone had this clear liquid?

    • kmr Says:

i am postmenopausal, have also had a few ‘gushes’ of clear liquid, and, separately, a small amount of clear yellow liquid followed by blood (not much, maybe 3 cc). That’s after 6 years of no discharge at all, following menopause. I had an ultrasound and it showed a small fibroid — haven’t seen my doc yet to find out whether the liquid could have come from a ‘rupture’ of that fibroid, or from something else. I’m intrigued that everyone else here describes mostly blood, coming from fibroids or a fibroid rupture. But I wonder how many people have clear colorless or clear yellow liquid discharge. (it’s not an infection, no odor, and came only a few times, not repeated after that).

      • mommahash Says:

After my fibroid ruptured the bleeding stopped immediately and a dark grey, gritty discharge began for about 4 days. After the 4 days, my glans swelled tremendously, I could feel and hear “bubbling” in my neck/ear area and my lips swelled so badly that they split. This was over within less than 2 hours. I had a HORRIBLE taste in my mouth for about 2 days also. When I asked my gyn about it she said “I don’t know”, her most common response. A nurse eventually told me that the were all signs of infection working it’s way through my body.
I completely agree with the lady that said “Can they change the title to to forum to yes fibroid do rupture and doctors still know didilysquate about them!!”

      • Debbie Says:

I am also postmenopausal and I also have gushes of clear liquid and at times a blood tinged discharge…Mostly happens at night when I’m laying down…I have very large fibroids and one of my doctors have been after me to have my uterus removed…She has done every thing from biopsies and a D and C and has found nothing wrong cancer wise…No matter how many times I tell her about the “discharge” she freaks out and wants to yank out my uterus…even though no proof of a problem…Next week I’m having one of my ovaries removed due to a couple of cysts growing and apparently you are not suppose to grow them after menopause…I woke up this morning with bleeding and clear fluid again…but this time a little more blood than usual..I also have some light cramping today…it almost feels like pms! It is kind of nice to know I’m not the only one who this happens too…

  10. Angel Says:

I nearly died from a tumor that could not be seen by an ultra sound. Why? How? Cause: large tumor attached to back side of uterus burst or ruptured. My boyfriend found me past out an called 911 – because there was an excessive accumulation of blood soaked through my blue jeans. I was rushed to surgery after the ultra sound could not detect the tumor. I was given a blood because I’d lost so much. So whatever doctor you are talking with regarding this condition ~ please get a second or better yet, a third opinion from other doctors. If it wasn’t for my boyfriend I would have bled to death.
    In all sincerity,
    “Angel”

    • mommahash Says:

got many, many opinions and this forum is the only place that acknowledges that fibroids rupture! I’m willing to accept that it was something other than fibroids but not one professional has suggested any other option. I KNOW something ruptured but they treated me as if I was lying or over reacting.
In my situation the bleeding stopped with the rupture and all that passed was a black, gritty substance. Two days later the infection made it to my glans and made my neck and face swell to the point I couldn’t see. The ER sent me home to “rest”.
I had two reasonable size fibroids and multiple small one yet when she did the D&C there was only one lone broid about 1cm. When I asked her what happened to the others she actually shrugged her shoulders and said” I don’t know”
This was an agonizing (and expensive) experience and only one Dr took me serious and gave me pain meds. All the rest said to take Motrin.
I am amazed that all those female doctors were so clueless. I pray that my age will prevent me from experiencing this again and I pray for anyone that has to go through it in the future. Stand up for your health and even your life! Keep going to different doctors until you get one that understands!
Angel’s experience is just more proof that doctors don’t know much and fibroids and don’t take them seriously. Thank God for her boyfriend’s timing or we’d have one less Angel on earth!

      • shanaldo Says:

I too, was told the exact same BS on this very website. Apparently, doctors think they know EVERYTHING….and quite frankly, they DON’T. Doctors must ALWAYS LEARN – or they are obsolete. I’m sorry that this happened to you (happened to me, too) and NOBODY WOULD LISTEN. I believe you!!!

      • mommahash Says:

shanaldo, I have read your story on here and there are only 4 of us (now 5) that have experienced a rupture. They really need to study fibroids more. I think the emotional and mental trauma was just about as bad as the physical for me! Mommhash

  11. Kari. Gomez Says:

Yes, I have felt a bursting feeling and the a gush of blood. It feel like I peed my pants and so when I went to Pee in the toilet I had a clot about the size of a fifty cent piece and very thick. I also notice my back hurts a lot the day before. The day of this happening I don’t feel like myself.

  12. LONA LANE Says:

I am not sure what happened to me I have had fibroid tumors also but I did not have any pain but have been bleeding non stop and heavy for 8 days and large clots passing the whole time. Some would just fall out of me while going to the bathroom. I had never had a period like that. So, I thought it might of been the fibroid tumor bursting. Some of the clots were as big as a gulf ball. Still bleeding now but the clots are almost done and not bleeding as much now. Almost went to the hospital but talked myself out of it. I am 52 and going through menopause.

    • Leslie Bachman Says:

      Lona –
I am 53 and have always had heavy periods but things got worse in the past 5-8 years or so. I have several fibroids and one is almost the size of a tennis ball but I do not want to have my uterus removed. I also had large blood clots that were very concerning to me. I heard about a prescription called Lysteda – generic is called tranexamic acid – 650 mg tabs. It is expensive at $65/month with a coupon at Walgrens but less expensive if you have insurance. It has reduced my bleeding and almost all blood clots. My periods are still heavy some days and it lasts 10-14 days but at least I can manage better now. I’m biding my time until menopause is over, then the fibroids should shrink over time because my estrogen level should drop. I have had ultra sound tests before and after blood clots have passed and the fibroids remain intact and have not gotten any larger over the last couple of years. Talk with a gynecologist if you are interested in trying the prescription. It was not suggested to me – I had to ask for it. If you are like me, you are anxious for menopause to be over! I will pray for the best for you!

      • Rusti Says:

wow, sounds a lot like me, huge fibroid, the size of a 5 month pregnancy, it’s a pain let me tell ya, I have long periods and my iron level drops, I can’t take the iron pills because they make me sick and than I pull the muscles vomiting. how do we know when we are done with our cycles? and will this sucker shrink. horrible just horrible

      • Leslie Bachman Says:

I was told by my doctor that most women are done with menopause by age 55. It can depend on family history. Some women’s periods will taper off and be irregular while others will just stop. The tranexamic acid/Lysteda has given me some relief from blood clots. It might be worth a try if you are like me in trying to survive until menopause.

  13. Coral Says:

I believe they can burst! 8 years ago I was walking my dog..It was late winter/early spring and roads were alittle dicey..I slipped on gravel and fell really hard.I thought I broke my hip for a second..Someone kindly stopped and helped me up.I managed to walk me and my dog home.I was really sore and noticed abdominal pain in the evening. I thought it was from falling so hard. When I got up that night I went to the bathroom, and what looked like thick blood ( dark purple ), would squirt out, like someone squeezing a bottle. It did that the next day periodically , then all hell broke loose.I started gushing watery light purple fluid like crazy. It was worse when I would lie down.I used incontinence pads to absorb this fluid and had to change them about every half hour for a few days (including night!).This fluid kept coming out alot for about three days, then towards the end it was mixed with a greeish yellow discharge, then quit.I had just been to the doctors for a hand infection and was taking doxycycline all that week, so I figured that would take care of any infection. After all this my abdomen was sore for about 5 days, slightly puffy ( it was much more swollen before all this happened ), then the puffiness went away and I haven’t had any issues since.I never went to the doctors for this, don’t know what it was, and have Googled and never found any kind of information pertaining to this type of issue.I knew from prior years I was told I had a chocolate cyst? And fibroids, but never seeked treatment. .I am 50 now, and still get a puffy sore uterine area, but no bleeding. I do have SLE , and my periods were always irregular, as sometimes I wouldn’t have them for months, other times I would leak a dark mucousy gritty blood, which I am assuming was old blood, and that would go on for weeks at a time.I also always got a Lupus flare on my period, as I guess Lupus is estrogen fed..I just wanted to share my story .. ♡

hello friends, I am a 50 year old woman with a fibroid tumor as large as a 5 month pregnancy, it is very painful at times, I can not at this time have it removed because of me being a business owner and taking care of an elderly parent, does anyone here know if when my cycles stop if it will shrink? it is hard to deal with and my iron levels go up and down, what can I do??

      • Rusti Says:

I have to add just this, as long as I keep my iron levels up my clots are way less and the pain is less. not being able to take the iron pills I have found that 1 teaspoon of BLACK STRAP MOLLASSES every morning is 70% of my daily value, NO it does not taste good but, no heart burn and no horrible stomache issue’s I can live with that, just thought I would share that with all of you.

      • shanaldo Says:

        Hi Rusti,
Bear in mind – you may continue your periods for YEARS. Do not tell me you are a business owner and you don’t have time – this is YOUR HEALTH. If it kills you, you won’t have time anyways. (Right?) I had UFE – uterine fibroid embolization – the fibroids have shrunk on their own. Erica is correct – and waiting it out will mean being asked 30 times a day how far along you are – and getting bigger all the time. Quit being stupid – who will take care of mom if YOU cannot? You need to figure this out now, because at the rate you are going, you will not be able to continue at this pace. REALLY.

      • Erica Says:

Your fibroid will not shrink until you reach menopause. If you cannot have on of the procedures, then you have to wait it out.

My first doctor was a man because that’s all there is to choose from up here in the woods. He said that I had no other option other then a hysterectomy. I found another dr. In oakland CA named dr. Gentry. She is confident and made me more comfortable right away. She will be using the morsilator tool to remove it through 3 small holes. If there is cancer present it will spread it quickly.luckily I just got results no cancer. Now waiting for insurance to approve. It’s taken so long and I feel very uncomfortable but not bleeding. Though I have had wired clear discharge I don’t think is ovulation. Worried that it will burst before I get to surgery. Have been feeling very weak all week. Ive been taking dandelion root and milk thistle pills for many months to try and shrink it. Also switched to matcha instead of coffee. Thank for sharing your stories. We are all we have till doctors pull their heads out of their bums.

I think they do burst. It is weird how alot of women experience pain and heavy bleeding not during their period then something fall out then on their next visit the fibroid is gone. It doesn’t make any sense for doctors to say they cannot or do not burst or detach. They are full of themselves.

They either burst or drain, maybe fill back up, who knows, but they do something!! I’ve had the bursting several times over the past 2 yrs, I’m 42yrs old. The worst was this past Friday. That morning I had Terri oe back pain and noticed an abnormally dastinded area on right pelvic side. It felt as large as cantaloupe. By noon, I had the”burst” and clots the size of lemons every 15 minutes until 6:30am Saturday. I basically sat on the toilet for hours, or never getting more than 10 ft away. The destination is gone, I showed a 5lb weight loss in less than 24hours. Lost entirely to much blood, and am now trying to replenish my blood loss with supplements and fluids. I’m very weak but my blood pressure finally came back up to normal. I have not been to the doctor yet, but will go soon. Yes they BUST!!!

My bleeding stopped immediately after the burst but I had a gritty, dark gray discharge for about two days and than my neck and lips swelled tremendously when the infection hit my glans. No help or explanation from the doctor. Needless to say I have found a new doctor.

  19. Mhongwe Says:

I had a blackish busting experience with cloths, with pain in lower abdomen and lower back a few days before the bursting and having had my period 2 weeks prior. What do I do?

You are the first person, other than myself, that has said it was “blackish”. Mine was dark gray and gritty. A day or so later my neck and lips swelled tremendously as my body fought the infection.
I would suggest you go to the Dr ASAP. At the very least you will probably need a DNC. Good luck though because 95% of doctors still say fibroids don’t rupture, but as you can tell from this forum THEY DO and not always with massive bleeding! I wish you the best. Please update once you go. It could help so many others.

I had an ultrasound in the hospital, i went in due to excessive bleeding. They found fibroids. They worked me over good with the untrasound and after i had worse bleeding. Is there a way to make them burst?

Sorry but bursting is rare. Most professionals don’t even believe it’s possible. Depending on the size, they will probably do a DNC or embolization. They used to go straight for a hysterectomy. Sadly, they still don’t know much about them.

Hi. I’m 27 and was diagnosed with fibroid and been suffering with assists rupturing as well. I have a appointment with a gynecologist on the 8th of sep. Sometimes this pain is unbelievable especially when I’m at work as I set 8 to 9 hrs at a desk 5 days a week constantly putting pressure down there. I would like to know what this natural remedy is as I am to young and scared to go through a hysterectomy. I don’t have kids yet but my husband and I would like to have that as a option when the time is right.
Ps I am really scared of any surgical procedures that has to put me under do to the fact of when I was about 5 or 6 I had my tunsuls removed and I woke up in the middle of that procedure.

I am 36 yr old, and I strongly believe that my fibroid “bursted” yesterday. About two weeks ago me and my husband went on a vacation to Washington DC. I was on my last days of my period and I thought that would be done and I would “enjoy” my vacation with my hubby. We did a lot of sight seeing in DC, walked for almost whole day, and half day on a second day. So, instead of my period getting lighter it got heavier but, when I got back home, three days after it stopped. Last Friday me and my husband had intercourse and after that I started to spot, and yesterday (Monday) whole day I felt sleepy, weak, my lower back hurt, my right leg hurt and my lower stomach felt funny and I had carps on and off. After I got home, as a routine, I went to walk my dog, after i got back, i took shower and as I was cleaning myself I felt sharp pain in right side and all of sudden all the pressure was gone and pain stopped too. However, no more than 30 minutes later BOOM!! I felt a warm feeling around my crotch area. I ran to the bathroom and huge clots with, what it seems like, tons of blood came out of me. I put on a pad and then I filled that pad with 10 minutes, another one and the circled continued for like two hours. I was afraid to go to sleep because I was afraid to drenched myself and sheets in blood. But, my body and mind got tired and I felt asleep. Surprisingly nothing came out during my sleep and in the morning on my way to work. Now I am sitting at my desk, wearing “protection” just in case, and I feel blood coming out but in small amounts. I went to bathroom, there are still cots but very small once, nothing like yesterday. Anyway, I just thought I would share my experience with you ladies and I spread the word that this happens !!!
