This is the first in a series of separate posts on fibroid doctors. Finding a good local medical professional is key to getting the best fibroid care you can. I’m the first to admit that locating a doctor can be difficult. Hopefully, this will assist in that process.
General links:
American Medical Association Doctor Finder
You have to do the disclaimer to get to the search page. Just put in “Obstetrics & Gynecology” and your zip code to do the search. Click on a few names that come up. Not all physicians have the same amount of info in their listing.
Society of Interventional Radiology
Doctor Finder to locate Interventional Radiologists who perform the Uterine Fibroid Embolization/Uterine Artery Embolization procedure.

Check the site to see if ExAblate is available in your area. You can also call toll-free in the US: 1 866 EXABLATE (1 866 392 2528).
[Edited to add some great "doctor finding" tips by Same Boat!. Thanks!]
1. starting off with a lot of online research (crude Google searches in the beginning) about area specialists and hospitals.
&
2. asking *anyone* I knew who’d had any gyno-related procedures in the area to talk about their experience of the hospital/for their dr.’s name if applicable.
&
3. making a list of major area hospitals & going to their websites to read what they have to say about this area of gyno care. e.g., in nyc, many of the big hospitals have a special fibroid-info pages/dept.s & this is one way to start reading up on people who specialize in the field.
&
4. asking anyone i knew who had gone to med school at an area hospital (& hence would have to have rotated through obgyn at some point) about dr. reputations…&/or asking anyone i knew who worked in an area hospital (whether nurse, anesthesiologist, dr, whatever) if they could do some inside poking around for me about the unit’s & various dr.’s reputations.
I will add a few comments after I post this. I really want to make sure the information is presented clearly. This is not just limited to the US. Because the site gets hits from all over the world (anywhere from 25-40%), I would also appreciate useful links from global visitors. Please add a comment if you are looking for a doctor or if you wish to give a “shout out” to the great one(s) you found.

I recently (this week!) had an abdominal myomectomy done by Dr. Jody Blanco at Columbia Presbyterian. I went to both him and Dr. Ascher Walsh (for a second opinion) and felt more comfortable with Dr. Blanco. He was very thorough and was even able to point out the placement of both the fibroids during my initial exam (I was able to feel them). I was surprised when Dr. Ascher Walsh was unable to locate the placement of one of my fibroids during his exam (I had to point out the placement of the second one). Dr. Blanco recommended an AM due to the location & size of the fibroid. I felt most comfortable with his recommendation (I had also consulted with someone a year ago and she also recommended an AM for my situation). Dr. Blanco was very down to earth, is very experienced and comes highly recommended. My experience at Columbia Presbyterian was also great (excellent nursing staff). I had very little blood loss during the surgery ( a worry of mine) and am feeling better than expected. I would highly recommend Dr. Blanco. I think it comes down to who you feel most comfortable with as both men have excellent credentials.

Hi Everybody! YAY!!!
FYI — I contacted WordPress and they were able to fix the blog!!! Still no sign of Eclectic Geek herself, but at least most things seem to work.
I’ve asked if it was an actual malfunction or the domain mapping wasn’t paid up or whatever…. and will continue to follow through on this is just in case.
I really hope the whole thing is working again and all the regulars come back!
(for those who get ALL the comments emailed to them, sorry for all the repeat posts, but I want the message to get through to everyone!)

For anyone in Atlanta, I would like to recommend Dr. Kathleen Johnson at Dekalb Women’s Specialists. She did an excellent job with my AM.

May I simply say what a relief to uncover someone
that really knows what they’re discussing on the net. You definitely realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important. A lot more people ought to read this and understand this side of the story. It’s surprising you aren’t more popular given that you most certainly possess the gift.
