How are you feeling after your Endometrial Ablation?

Second post based on the great comment left describing a personal experience with endometrial ablation and laparoscopic myomectomy. Since I added the full comment in the previous post, I’ll just include an excerpt here:

Mary: I just had a laparoscopic myomectomy and hysteroscopy/endometrial ablation two days ago.

Pre-surgical issues and diagnosis: I had a huge, slow growing external fibroid that was about 9 * 10 cm at its peak, plus several smaller internal fibroids that were the cause of my long, heavy, painful periods. My gynecologist referred me to a surgeon who is head of Ob-Gyn at a local hospital and teaches at a major Canadian medical school. (Very relaxed guy, easy to talk to, and well-respected.) He checked me out and declared that the internal fibroids could be taken care of with hysteroscopy and ea.

Went to the Dr. today for my recent issues listed above. She believes some of it may be hormonally related as well. I was on birth control for many years prior to the endometrial ablation that coming off it can cause the body to do some things it has not in a long time. However, she does not feel everything I’m feeling or that is occurring is related to that. She could feel what might be a sizable cyst on my right ovary (had them before) – which could explain some of the ongoing pain. She also mentioned the possibility of fluid backing up into the fallopian tubes. I go for an ultrasound next Tuesday to look in to it. So, next week it is for the next chapter! Hopefully things will be better by then I hope!

I had albation done on May 5th. It’s been a little over 2 months now and i just woke up to my period. I had to use a tampon and am waiting to see how long before i have to change. I would like to know if there is anyone who is a little further along in the process who did have a period after albation and now the beeding is completley gone.

      • Lisa Says:

I had my ablation done on April 5th. The doctor told me there would be bright red bleeding after 2 months and that this is part of the healing process. It happened exactly as he told me. It has now been more than 3 months and I haven’t had any bleeding or even spotting at all for at least 6 weeks. Not sure if that’s typical for all, but I’m very pleased. Hope that’s of some help for you Sherry!

      • Alean Says:

I had my ablation about 3 years ago and the only dissappointment i have is the black or dark brown cycle i have that also carries an odor. i have been to my ob-gyn with a tampoon so he could send it out for testing. all was well so he told e don’t worry. it started like that about 9 months after the ablation and i still have cramps but not as severe

      • Nancy Says:

I had ablation surgery a year and a half ago. My periods are much lighter and I am not anemic anymore. I do still get pms, though.

Hi, I had the thermal EA 7 days ago. At first after the procedure i was in a lot of pain, however this settled by the next day. I have been peeing a lot since the procedure and 2 days after the procedure i felt really down in myself (felt like i had post natal depression again). However this feeling did subside (thankfully!). I have had no bleeding as yet, although have a constant clear leakage (which at times i have wondered whether i am leaking urine). I had a lot of pain under my rib cage after the procedure also, felt like pressure their constantly. Now i am on day 7 after the procedure, and have had a very swollen stomach for a few days now, and still leaking quite a bit. I just hope this swelling and leaking settles soon as i go on holiday in 3 weeks, and want to be able to enjoy it!. Oh i have also had tender breasts since the procedure, and they dont seem to be improving.

      hi
I am coming up a 7 days since my procedure—- I had a lot of pain the day of and the following. I still have a bloated belly – which makes me very nervous — bloated feeling – gassy cramps likes and lots gas– and still leaking clear fluid enough for a pad — no bleeding yet. I called my doctor about these effects – and was told bloating – cramping normal while healing. I am hoping it all resolves – and not just trading one thing for another!! kim

  3. Lisa Says:

I had the EA on June 2nd…had the normal bleeding afterwards and then it slowed down a bit…but never really stopped. I thought it was going to stop at one point but then it came for my cycle to start (Jun 28) and had the same feeling I did before, with the pressure and pain in my abdomen…then my cycle started again! :( It wasn’t as heavy but it was there…did not have to use tampons just pads…but 11 days later I am still having blood. It doesn’t constantly run but when I go to the bathroom it comes out and at least a teaspoon if not more. My doctor said it could be my uterus since it was a little large and maybe the EA did not solve what was wrong. I will be having a Ultrasound soon to see what is going on. I sure hope this bleeding stops…right now it seems worse to me. The next step would be partial hysterectomy..but I am not going to rush into that, I will give my body time to heal and see what happens.

  4. Shell Says:

Following on from my recent post, had my procedure done on 29 June, after i was passing a clear discharge, however i started bleeding on the 7th July and today i am starting to pass quite large clots also. I have had this before after a previous op and ended up back in hospital because they couldn’t stop the bleeding. So i am feeling a bit apprehensive in case the same is going to happen again. Has anyone else passes clots after this procedure??

    • Colee Says:

I just had my EA on monday July 12th I did well that day and Tuesday. Although Wednesday I started having the clear leakage and seems to be getting worse, even wonder if it’s urine. The cramps are also increased, I haven’t had any bleeding but did just pass what would look like a clot with out the blood. Also my uterus seems to swell up and go down, 8months pregnant I would say is how I feel. I wish I would of just had the hysterectomy, as I see that seems to be the out come for most women anyway. I did forget to mention I come from heavy bleeding, cramps and endometriosis and andomyosis(I think I spelled that wrong). I wish all of you good luck, this has been the hardest thing in my life I’ve had to decide on, EA or Hysterectomy … By far I just wish I had done the hysterectomy and hormones the rest of my life. Reason for hormones is because I was told due to the endometriosis I will have to have a complete hysterectomy or the endometriosis can still grow if you have the overies still. Best wishes!

    • Lisa Says:

I am at 3 weeks from ablation. Only clear first 2 weeks. Some tinged with color this last week and then today bright red started and a good size clot this evening. Cramping like previous periods.

  5. Lisa Says:

Had the Novasure ablation done on July 1. Procedure was a breeze, I was put under a light general anesthesia and felt nothing. Pain after was very little, I never even took an ibuprofen or anything else, I just felt a little aching now and then. I have had light spotting, ranging from yellowish, to brown to bright red, but not heavy, just need a panty liner. I have continued to take birth control pills, and tomorrow would be the start of my normal period, we’ll see what happens.

  6. Andree Says:

I am on day 6 after my MEA ablation. Proceedure went well, lots of pain after but settled by the next day. Had pain for a couple of days in shoulder blades and chest but that went quite quick too. Just been signed off work for a week and undergoing blood tests as i have a pain in my liver and kidney ever since the operation which is not subsiding. Awaiting the results. Have felt really rough and so wiped out. Have a very small discharge but majorly bloated. Anyone know of how to aleviate the bloating to get rid of it? It is so uncomfortable!

    • melinda Says:

Andree, I read your post about eating activia and taking Bio- acidophillis. I feel so dumb, what is this and can I buy this at a drug store? Melinda

      • Andree Says:

        Hi Melinda,

You can buy acidophilis in drug stores or health food shops. This is a much lower dose and not as effective as the Bio acidophilis. This you can only buy online – I purchase mine from Bio Care. It will help to put the good bacteria back into your gut and it should bring you back to normal. I would take it for a month just to make sure. Andree

      • melinda Says:

Andree, Thanks so much for the information. I will purchase this right away. Melinda

  7. char Says:

I had my ablation done 4 weeks ago now, and still wearing a pantiliner. I have had a period since and it wasn’t near as bad…hardly any bleeding and not as bad of cramps(only a few tylenol compared to a whole bottle)I also had severe back pain and really bad nausea for 3 days after surgery but thankfully those went away though the back is still pretty sore at times. I am experiencing really bad bloating still especially in the morning.(im going to doc soon so hopefully he can give anwers) I also have attempted sex twice since surgery but it is really painful….anyone know about this???? It is getting super frustrating and annoying for both parties involved….no info on this either
    thanks

    • Dottie Says:

Hey Char, I have had my abalation on Aug 5, and now Today is exactly 4weeks…I waited until my third week to relax my body back into pleasure..lots of forplay…would you believe I got my good feeling back.I advise you to take your time.as i, try the top you lead and allow your body to tell you how far you can go. I am feeling great. still awaiting my following month period nothing yet. All woman are different…But for me what is ..is better than what was…Hope this helps.

Day 14 post D&C and Novasure:(age 50: heavy bleeding and cramping led to EA)
Needed heavy pain meds through day 11. Feeling better, but severe mood swings, hot flashes and lack of energy. Watery discharge with some tissue expulsion the last few days. Low energy and general malaise seems to be biggest problem. I have a gyn appt. in 2 weeks. Evenings dull ache in uterus. Hoping for best. Appreciate your comments.

    • CQ Says:

Your story is similar to mine, had a cavaterm EA 10 days ago, went back to work within a week, but am still passing watery discharge and those really gross pieces of tissue! Sore lower abdo and back ache by the end of the day and super tired. I have not resumed exercise yet.. Am seeing my gynae in 3 days so will see what he thinks. I am also hoping for the best and trying to think positively about the procedure.

  9. Diana Says:

Had a D&C and ablation 9 days ago. The mild discomfort after wasn’t too bad, however, I made the mistake of taking Torodol on an empty stomach and it just about killed me! bleah. My main issue is I look like I’m 4 months pregnant! My stomach has been majorly bloated since the procedure and I have occasional indigestion and nausea. I hope this goes away soon, seeing Dr. for follow up in 5 days. Hopefully this is temporary. :(

    • melinda Says:

I had the ablation 8 days ago. Also had mild discomfort. My main issue is I look like I’m 8 months pregnant!!! My stomach is majorly bloated and I have missed a week from work as of today. I cannot fit into any of my clothes and have to stay inside and wear my gown all day. I have a hard time breathing sometimes and it feels like my skin is going to brust wide open. Did your doctor say this is normal? Mine said this should not be like this and to give it a another week to see if it goes away. But am reading of alot of women who have bloating and my doctor said it could be gas. I canot take this any more. Need to get back to LIFE!!

      • Andree Says:

To answer both Diana and Melinda.

I had an (MEA) ablation just over 2 weeks ago now. I too had awful bloating but this now is nearly gone. i had just over a week off work and towards the end of that time i started to suddenly feel better. I also felt so down with it, and didnt think i would ever feel better and looked pregnant! i had no energy and craved bread, cakes and biscuits all the time!!!!!
I have been eating activia and also taking Bio-acidophilis which has helped a lot. It seems that the drugs cause havoc with your good bacteria in your stomach and basically kills them. This causes bloating big time! I am getting back to normal – bleeding has stopped although it looks today like i am about to start a light period, no pain, just tender breasts.
I now feel on top of the world. My tummy is nearly back to normal, i am back in nearly all of my clothes and everyone saying that i look really well!
Hang in there, it will pass and hopefully you will feel better.

  10. Sherry Says:

Thank you Lisa! That is very helpful and encouraging. I am hoping to have the same results with eventually no more period at all. Did you have similar symptoms as when you were getting your period when the bleeding started? And, was the bleeding enough to need a tampon? Any information you can give is very appreciated.

    • Lisa Says:

Hi Sherry, I’d have to say that the bleeding was not heavy enough for a tampon. I had spotting up till that time, but never more than a panty liner could handle. I should also note that I am 51 and the doctor told me my chances of it being successful were better since I was approaching menopause. Late menopause runs in my family, along with several years of heavy bleeding preceding menopause. I do hope you have similar results as well!

  11. Vanessa Says:

Tomorrow is one week since Novasure ablasion surgery. Things were great until today. Now I’m having terrible bloating which sounds fairly common after reading all the other posts. How long before this goes away? I look like I’m about 4 months pregnant. Yuck!

    • melinda Says:

I had the same surgery 8 days ago. I too did well the first two days now I have terrible bloating. I canot fit into any of my clothes I have missed a week of work and I look like am 8 months pregnant. It feels not right like my skin is going to brust did your doctor say this is normal?

      • Jeanine Says:

what has happened since? I had the ablation procedure done in april and have gone to the extent of taking a pregnancy test! I look like I am 5 months pregnant!!! Bloated is an understatement!!! I work out 5 days a week, eat right (occassional sweet…) don’t drink…I have not gotten my period since the procedure but I AM MISERABLE!!!! Please anyone experiencing this???

      • melinda Says:

Jeanine, I went back to the doctor today to be checked because my stomach continues to swell!! My doctor was very puzzled about my swelling He said He had never seen this before and could not give me any answers to go home and take gas-x every 4 hours and come back in 3 days. You have got to be kidding me, you had your surgery back in April and you still look like you are 5 months pregnant I hope this goes away for you and I hope this does not last that long for me. I told my doctor about what I had been reading and he said it was not common .Please keep me posted about your up date. THanks Melinda

      • Deborah Jaques Says:

I also had the treatment in April and am upset by my growing stomach and weight gain. I have gained 10 pounds since the treatment and can’t fit into most of my clothes. No change in lifestyle to explain this. I have only fluctuated a few pounds over the last 10-20 years. Heavy periods are gone for now, but if this fatness has been caused by the procedure, I would take the periods back anyday. I am embarrassed by my pregnant looking belly at age 50.

    • Jeanine Says:

Well all! I finally went to an endocrinologist to find out why I look like baby hughey since this procedure…and…I am in menopause! Spiked levels of estrogen, hormones and cholesterol. Weigh 152, used to be 135 before procedure. Constantly tired, night sweats…Finding a new GYN and wholeheartedly believe this procedure put me there. I just turned 45.

  12. Shell Says:

My procedure of thermal EA was three weeks ago today, I have had bleeding that has varied from heavy to light since the 7th July, however I am feeling better in myself in comparison to the first two weeks after the procedure, were I felt tired, sore, bloated, and uncomfortable. I have experienced night sweats for nearly two weeks since the procedure, but I think this could be my body trying to re-adjust. I still have bloating, tends to go worse as the day goes on, but this seems to be settling a bit as my bloating was much worse during the first 2 weeks. I am just taking each day as it comes, and will be glad to just stop leaking, as I am fed up of this now.

    • Kelsey Says:

I had the procedure done 5 days ago and your post makes me feel better. I have been bleeding the same today as the day I left the hospital. Bloating that increases over the course of the day and plan old tired with night sweats. Some of it all seems strange as the ablation does not do anything to the hormones, but perhaps it is just the body’s way of adjusting. My doctor told me no exercise for one week and no sex for six weeks (not that I feel like it!)

      • melinda Says:

Kelsey, My doctor told me sex after a week but every thing I read says two weeks or longer. First of all I do not feel like it at all I just do not understand all the week differences. It seems like it would be the same time frame for everyone. Let me know if you hear others waiting longer. THanks Melinda

  13. Sherry Says:

Ok, now on the second day of my period but its nothing like i had before, thank goodness! I used the super on sunday with no leak through, and only had to change twice that day. Used one super yesterday and switched to regulars by noon. Today I have only used one regular and when i went to restroom was not full (now on second tampon for today) I think ill be done by tonight. My thoughts so far…disappointed im still having some bleeding…Seems bleeding is pretty common in the first few months, but happy it’s not like it was before…hoping eventually it will stop completly. Fingers crossed.

  14. Shhh Says:

I had the EA 2 days ago. Immediately after the surgery, I felt bloated. I still have it but hope it goes away soon! This is the worst part of the whole procedure so far. There’s really no relief from it throughout the day, and I am having a hard time sleeping at night because of it. After reading these posts, I feel like it is very common and will resolve itself. Thanks for this discussion forum. It eases my mind! :)

  15. Tammie Says:

I had the hydrothermal ablation done on monday – very mild cramping but i have blisters and pain in my vagional area. Did anyone else have this problem? Very painful to pee and sit.
    Thanks!

  16. Sam Says:

After reading everyone’s post I feel better. I had the Novasure Ablation on Friday, felt fine Saturday and worse on Sunday. I think the bloating is causing most of my discomfort. At least I can see this must be a normal thing. I think I am expereincing some slight depressed mood as well. Hopefully all will go away soon. I am hoping for no bleeding but will take minimal as mine were so bad to begin with. Always wanted to slap those who said they had a three day light period….lol!!!

  17. minny Says:

hi i had the balloon ablation last wednesday,i was very uncomfortable after and was in hosp for 2 days due to allergies i have.i came out friday and since then im so bloated very constipated and had to go to the urgent care last night in so much pain with bowels.ive also had a watery discharge but not to concerning but ive woke up this morning with period pain like cramps and feeling very wet i thought i was bleeding but its not its this watery discharge and it smells its really heavy im concernd! Im 29 and had pain and bleeding as well as several miscarriages, pelvic congestion syndrome endometriosis, this was the last resort before hysterectomy as my consultants reluctant to do it,i do have 2young children though..wonder if anyone else has had this.x

  18. Shannon Burrous Says:

I had the procedure done on July 15th. I had some cramping the first day and stayed in bed and slept most of the afternoon. That night I went for a walk (slow walk) with my husband because I didn’t want to lay in the bed any more.

A week after the procedure I had my period, on schedule, but it was minimal bledding, spotting is a better word. Then the next week I began ovulating again. Almost a week after my first period I had more spotting, leading me to believe that I have actually had two periods. Yesterday I began ovulating again. I’m not sure why this is happening but I have a call into the DR to see what she says.

I have been severely bloated. To the point that I can’t wear my rings some of the days. I wasn’t told anything about being this bloated or that being bloated was actually a side effect. I wish I would have known that. I have been working on losing weight and succesfully lost 50 lbs but gained 6 back since having the surgery. Nothing I seem to do helps get rid of it. I’m hoping that the bloating leaves soon.

  19. joy Says:

Had thermochoice EA /D & C on April 4. I bled and had discharge for 8 weeks. Then my period which my doctor said I wouldnt get came and lasted 7 days. I have had one every 21 days and have the worst cramps. I have no desire for sex and the period blood smells so bad I have to bathe several times a day during my period. I should have had a hysterectomy. I.m stuck with paying for this ridicuously expensive endevor and can’t afford to have another procedure. Very dissapointed. The only bright side is I’m not having constant periods. I feel I was lied to and docotrs are trying to sell this procedure to make bug bucks off of 10 minutes work.

  20. minny Says:

or im sorry thats awful! Im pleased we have the nhs in england..i think i will have a hysterectomy in a few months, did any of you have really heavy discharge its yellow and very smelly i am using 3 sanitary towels a day the discharge is so heavy i havnt had any bleeding though.x

    • Robin Says:

I had my NovaSure Eblation last Friday (also had D and C and Hysteroscopy) and am back at work feeling really good. So glad the 20-25 day periods with extremely heavy bleeding and clotting are hopefully over! Discharge is very light and watery with a light pink or brown tinge at times. Dr says no sex until f/u visit 3 weeks post surgery but I was wondering about swimming (lap swimmer 1 mile/day)? I know I cant wear tampons but discharge is light or non-existent so I really dont need them. I am perimenopausal and 48 years old.

  21. minny Says:

well i went to see my gp yesterday and he suspects i have a infection so he has given me 2 types of antibiotic and i have to go back next week.x

  22. Steph Says:

I had Novasure ablation 3 weeks ago today and still having some discharge. From what I read this is not uncommon at this stage. I did have a very light period that lasted 2 days and needed nothing more than a pantyliner. I have had my f/u visit and was given another round of antiobiotics for infection. I had a fowl odor after my period. I was just wondering how long the discharge should last? My Dr just told me that my body had to expell the dead tissue but didn’t say how long that might take.

    • Tracy Says:

This is true about the discharge with odor. I too had this for the first 3 mos. and thought how gross it was! But it finally went away but it made me nervous that I would always have the problem. No periods after 1 yr and 4 mos. not like I had always had anyway. Every 3 mos or so I do have a little discharge on the toilet tissue and use a pantiliner and by morning it’s done…Good luck and don’t worry, things will smell better soon ;)

      • debbie doo Says:

hey ive just had a endometrial abalation on the 3rd of sept im 46 years old n have been sterilized my periods were so heavy n painfull and stated to interfere with my day today life such as work well today is sunday 5th sept 2010 and ive got that smell lol oh my god its awfull i was sent home with no painkillers at all not told how long im not to have sex for n nothing about bloating i feel very week but otherwize ok ive slept a lot to oh and i should say i got my period the day of surgery mother nature is great lol ,after the op i bled quite a bit but its slowed down to just pinky water i will keep you posted as to how well i do but im not goin to push myself to hard n thank you to every woman that has commented on this it has really helped me

  23. Tootie Says:

I suffer from severe cramping and heavy menstrual bleeding since age 10. At age 40 (April 2008) I had endometrial ablation. My bleeding is extremely light but my cramps are horrific. Much worse than the severe cramping I had experienced prior to the procedure. I was the first to be laid-off at work because I missed at least 2-days each month. I take massive amounts of motrin but I am still confined to my bed. I am afraid I will overdose on the ibuprofen but it is the only thing that helps. What now? Hysterectomy?

  24. Sherry Says:

I had EA on May 5th, so officially on my 3rd month. I had a period June 22nd, it lasted two days. I had used two heavy tampons the second day…I think mor out of habit than anything else. I had another period the same time in July with the same amount of bleeding but lasted 3 days this time. Much better than 7 days of heavy bleeding, which is what i had prior to the EA. I am now in “PMS” week of the third period. Have same symptoms as before but my irritation level is very high this time. Like I cant even stand anyone to talk to me sometimes. My skin feels very oily and im having some breast tenderness, and that bloaty crampy feeling you get right before you start. Im not due for my next one for 10 more days. Im hoping no blood but i think its wishful thinking at this point considering Im having all the usual PMS symptoms. Reading about everyone’s experiances has made me realize we are all different and our bodies are reacting to the procedure in all kinds of strange ways. Hoping we all get through this with…worst case a 2-3 day light period, or no period at all as the final result. Im not sure how long to wait till its set in stone that I will still have a period or not. Is there anyone in the same time frame as I am that has anything more to share would be awesome! Hang in there ladies.

  25. Tracy Says:

I had the Novasure procedure and D&C in April 2009. The same day I returned home with strong abdominal pain. I rested and took tylenol and was pretty good the next day. I did have a clearish discharge which lasted approx. 1 week. I did have slight bleeding (pinkish-brown) 3 months later and every 3 months for about a yr. I just used a panty liner and feel that this part of the procedure was great!…HOWEVER…Now it’s August 2010. My stomach has gotten so big I look like I’m 5 mos pregnant. I don’t know what’s going on, but I am so embarrased. It’s not my lower abdomen where alot of women have a little pouch (especially after having children), Its my upper stomach, and it is very hard. I am going to a new GYN on tuesday, and hopefully can give me some idea what has happened. I have read several other posts about woman complaining about this very problem. Will check back with any info my new Dr can offer.

    • Katrina Says:

Tracy did you find out anything at the doctor? I am in the same boat. I had the procedure in April 2009 and experience terrible cramps before and after and severe bloating. I just dont know what to do about it. I read that some people are told that fluid and blood can back up in the fallopian tubes, but what is the cure for that? Please let me know if your doc gave you any help on the bloating.

      • Marley Says:

I had my Endometrial Ablation done on Sept. 3 2010 with the ablation my GYN also put in a Merina. The Merina is also an IUD, but was put in because my tubes where tied and cut back 12 years ago. He said the Merina would stop the fluid from backing up into my fallopian tubes, causes huges issues later on such as bloating and infection.

  26. Gina Says:

I had an ea done on June 30, 2010. I had a period 4 days later (beginning of July) but it was nothing like before. I used a normal amt of pads and did not have any accidents. It lasted about 6 or 7 days. I had another period beginning of August, lasting about the same amt of days and the flow was the same as the first after the ea. My problem/question is… when will this SPOTTING stop! It has gotten lighter but it is definitely still there. I constantly need to wear a mini-pad. I was told I’d have a bloody-brownish discharge for 3 to 4 weeks. It has now been 6 weeks since the ea. When i spoke to the dr’s office i was told to wait until after my 3rd period and THEN if i’m still spotting the dr will take a look. This spotting is very annoying. I haven’t went in my pool this whole summer because it’s not enough to wear a tampon… just hangin’ in there waitin’ :)

    • Andree Says:

I too have been “spotting” now since my ablation on 7th July, having had a very small period a couple of weeks ago. The bloating has gone down, thanks to bio acidophilis and eating activia yoghurts! I feel fabulous, just this irritating spotting that just keeps appearing! i have had one day without anything. Its just a light brownish colour, but no odour. We have not tried sex yet as my husband feels we should wait until its all stopped! but its very frustrating as we are going away on holiday in 10 days time and I am hoping it will have stopped by then!
I dont have a check up until 11th November, and I am just wondering if I can or could try having sex or should I wait? I so also want to swim but i am not sure how long it takes for you to heal? my dr didnt tell me anything :(

      • Gina Says:

Hi Andree! you had your ablation a week after i did. my dr had said intercourse was ok 2 weeks after. he also said i could use a tampon to swim if i wanted. i actually had my period last week while i was on vacation (2nd period since ablation) and was afraid to use a tampon to swim. i think this whole summer is shot in reference to swimming because of the ablation. anyway, hubby and i had intercourse 2x since and there were no horrible repercussions. the spotting is just totally annoying though. good luck :)

      • Marley Says:

On the sheet my doctor sent home with me (I will word it exactly how it is written)

Activity: Light Activities for 24 hours. Normal activities may be resumed after 24 hours.

Diet: Resume a normal diet as tolerated. If nausea occurs, clear fluids and a light diet may help

Discomfort: You may experience menstrual like cramping or pain. A pain reliever will usually control the discomfort.

Bleeding: There will be a moderate amount of bleeding. After a few days this may become dark in color and thicker. This discharge may last up to 2-3 weeks but should steadily decrease in amount.

If you are still experiencing periods, you may expect a period within 4-6 weeks. No tampons or douching, use only pads until your normal periods.

Hygiene: You may shower or bath after 24 hours. Do not swim or use a hot tub for 1 week.

Sexual Relations: Do not have intercourse for 1 week.

Notify your doctor if you have:

-Sudden, large increase in vaginal bleeding, especially if you are passing large amounts of fresh blood or clots.

-Pain not relieved by pain medication.

        -Fever and chills,

        - Persistant foul smelling discharge.

        Hope this helps.

    Hi everyone,

I had a D&C and ablation 2 1/2 years ago and am right back where I started. It started out really well, surgery went great, very little pain and discharge, felt fine. Only got my period every 8 weeks, then it came every 6, then back to once a month. Now, I don’t have a normal period, it is just very heavy blood clots. Now I’m being told my only option is a hysterectomy. I don’t have the money to pay for it nor can I afford to be off of work for 6 weeks. Not sure this procedure was ever worth it.

    • Amy Says:

Sara, it sounds like your endometrium may have grown back… can’t you ask them if they’d consider a second D&C and endometrial ablation? I think even if I had to do that every few years, I’d still prefer that to a hysterectomy…. It might also depend on how old you are… it might buy you some time if you’re getting close to menopause. At any rate, you might want to get a second opinion if you don’t want a hysterectomy. Best to you. Let us know what happens.

  28. Holland Says:

I had my Novasure procedure done on the 6th of August it’s now the 19th of August and I am having a ton of clear discharge. Enough where I have to wear a good size pad. My bloating has gone way down and the 4 pounds I gained right after the surgery have gone away. I am wondering what this is. I don’t have an appointment until Monday but I am wondering if I should call in now. Reading the posts its seems common but I am wondering if anyone has had their doctor tell them what the clear stuff is. When I go to the dr on Monday I will post the outcome.

    • Christine Says:

I am 4 months post-ablation and need to get my act together and post more here but I sort of was led to believe the clear discharge was the ‘healing’ of the ‘burn’ the NovaSure causes. Think about if you burn your arm on the stove…(maybe I have a better point of reference being a klutz??)…as the burn heals it ‘weeps’. That’s what I think the clear discharge is…kinda gross but makes sense! Since weeping is your body’s way of cleaning a burn.

Or am I out in left field?? The bloat and weight gain directly after can be attributed to burn healing as well since a burn will swell (plus they pump you full of IV fluids for the procedure and often full of air doing the procedure so they can SEE in there)…can’t tell you why I’ve been steadily gaining since the procedure though…up 10 lbs now…and it’s starting to scare me as I was 60 lbs overweight to start with!! I haven’t actually put on any weight before this in over 4 years…3 weeks after I had my baby in October I was down all the baby weight plus more…and have gained since the ablation! :(

      • jamie Says:

I had endometrial ablation on 5/10/10 I still have discharge that requires me to wear a pantyliner everyday. It is very irritating. Plus, the ablation didn’t work there is no difference, except now I have to wear a pantyliner.

  29. pat Says:

I’m 46 yrs old and had the EA on July 29,2010. The pain afterward wasn’t bad at all. One of my problem is discomfort and the constant urgency to urine so I call my doctor offfice for some relief and they recommend AZO Standard which clear it up the next day. My second problem now is the light spottting and sometime soreness when will it end or will it.

  30. minny Says:

well pleased to say my heavy discharge has cleared up all i have is some light brown discharge although i am a bit uncomfortable still..since the op ive noticed if i have to urinate i cant hold it in like i used to i seem to need the toilet more..im getn concerned about this as im having to use a pad just for dribbling and i can be just sat down watchn tv and not feel like i need to wee but some comes out.im getting paranoid that people know its happening..may have to c my consultant.

  31. Danielle Says:

I had the Her Option on July 16, 2010. It’s almost the same procedure as the Novasure but I didn’t have to be put out. I was given a valium & a torodal before the procedure (at home) & when I got to the doctor’s office I got a torodal shot. The procedure itself was not bad. The most painful thing out of everything is that your bladder has to be full to do the actual procedure. The procedure only took about 20 minutes today. I didn’t experience much pain afterwards, but was sent home with some Loratab in case. I just slept for the first day & took it easy the second day. I had it done on a Friday so that I could go back to work on Monday. I did experience the watery discharge, but it mostly turned into blood. I thought it was stinky & horrific. When I went back to the doctor for my check up he told me that it was normal. I probably bled for about 3 weeks. So now I’ve started my period. Yes, it’s bad, but the doctor told me to expect it to be bad. He said that it’s just getting rid of all the funk in there and to give it a few months. I’ll recommend this procedure to anyone. It was either this, an IUD or hysterectomy. We decided this was the best for now. Alot of times, whenever your doctor’s office calls your insurance company these days to check to see the coverage on the IUD’s they automatically order the IUD and send it to your doctor. We were unsure about what procedure to do on me because I had a cone biopsy last year and my cervix was really narrow. So he had to try to figure out what kind of instruments would actually fit. So by doing that, he said the her option was the best for me. However I do have my tubes tied & I have a fibroid in my uterus, so eventually I’m sure we’ll have to go with the hysterectomy! As of now, I’m just praying that the bad periods with cramping will go away!!! Good luck to everyone that has these problems…

  32. michelle Says:

I had the uterine ablation done on aug 20, 2010 i had just started my period the night before i went in to or and came out completely off my period wow! i have had no bleeding, no discharge, no drainage, and have not had on a pad or panty liner since i have ben home. I hope it stays away forever. i did have painful cramps after i came home the same day but took some aleve and it went away after a few hours. i had the bloating feeling to and constant gas or bowel movement feeling for several days and the hurting in my ribs and chest like indigestion. started taking stool softner daily and after the bowel movements started i felt better and the more the better also i am a fan of milk of magnesia….today i feel great! also had a hernia repair at the same time……..it is different for everone…..good luck.

    • Amy Says:

Michelle, since you had such a great experience, can you tell us what kind of endometrial ablation you had done? (novasure, hysteroscopic, etc…) It seems there are very different experiences depending on what one has done…. so I think everyone should include this this info. I had a hysteroscope EA with a D & C with a roller ball… probably about 4-5 years ago and I have no complaints at all!

  33. amy Says:

I also had the novesure procedure done.It all went well until the 3rd day where i started feeling crampy and bloated. It looked like i was 4 months pregnant.I called the doctor and he suspected an infection so he prescribed a couple of rounds of antibiotics. This procedure was done almost 6 months ago.I am no longer having any periods but my stomach is hard as a rock.Ive put on 7 lbs and i feel miserable.I have went to the extreme and bought a few pregnancy tests.I am making a docotr appt soon because i really cant stand this feeling anymore.I would have rather had the heavy periods.I do know however everyone handles surgery differently and i had a friend go through it and have no problems. So who knows?

  34. Theresa Says:

I had my ablation and D&C on July 13th. According to the dr. all went well but 5 weeks of bleeding was enough. Now the bleeding has stopped, but it hurts when I urinate and now I have a neon yellow discharge and an odor. I am worried I have some kind of infection? Has anyone had the same experience. I am seriously wondering if this proceedure was worth all of the headache – not to mention bloating and overall stomach discomfort.

  35. Gina Says:

August 30 was exactly 3 months after novasure ea. got my period (3rd time now since ea) on august 31. this one is even lighter than the other 2 periods i had since ea, so at least that is a plus. i did notice more mood swings/night sweats-hot flashes more than i used to get but maybe that would have happened even if i didn’t get the ea. i hope hope hope that the annoying spotting/discharge stops after this period, at least that is what my dr’s office told me should happen. and if it doesn’t i’m going to make an appt with the dr. i don’t think i’m supposed to be spotting for 3 full months after. bye for now.

  36. Gina Says:

oops, my mistake, i just wrote aug 30 was exactly 3 months after ea but it was really only 2 months… but i did have 3 periods since. sept 30 will be exactly 3 months after procedure… we shall see how this month of sept (after my period stops) goes regarding discharge/spotting :)

  37. penny Says:

i had the novasure done on thursday, sent home 2 hours later felt fine only a little bit sore but took some painkillers then felt great, was only bleeding for a few hours and since then ive had nothing, i had a lot of pain in my right leg but i put that down to having my legs up in the air in them thingys lol im now in alot of pain with a bloated feeling and feels like im full of gas, i feel like im a few months pregnant, im gonna go to the doctors on monday if im still feeling the same. After reading a lot of posts on the internet i wasnt gonna go through with the op but im glad i did, one thing ive learnt is people are quick to moan about the bad things but never praise up the good things, im glad i had it done and cant wait for things to settle down. Good luck girls x

  38. Dduncan Says:

I had the Her Option ablation on July 26. Nothing but problems since. Not much pain right afterwards. Three days later I had severe cramping and bloated up to my breast bone. Finally after two visits back to my OB/GYN I went to my Family doctor and she ordered a ultrasound. I had a huge blood clot in my uterus. OB/GYN drained blood clot and released me. Three days later I was back and the clot was forming again, drained again. Bowels have not been performing normally since ablation as well. My GYN finally referred me to a GI specialist. Had a CT scan two days ago waiting for the results. Today I have sharp pains behind my belly button and I feel like my entire insides front and back are going to explode. It is almost like a constant contraction. Sometimes I feel like I can’t breath. I honestly wish I had never had the ablation. I could deal with the heavy long periods, this bloating is going to drive me over the edge. I even feel it in my neck! My biggest fear is I’m going to have to end up having a hysterectomy.

  39. Kim Says:

I had the ablation done 9/9, be a week tomorrow. still weeping bloody discharge, wicked bloated, even hurts to wear shoes my feet all puffy. Some pain under rib cage, and having some kinda post partum blues. i didnt know all these other issues would happen. wish i found this site before surgery. I will see the Dr for followup next week, see what he says i guess. Good luck to all with this, i guess the key is to be patient, which i am not patient at all in this condition.

  40. deb Says:

I had the balloon procedure (thermachoice) done Sept. 20. The procedure was no problem, but for anyone with hemmorroids, I’d recommend asking for lubricant if they give you any pain block rectally. Most of my pain came from this not being done. I’m allergic to a lot of meds, so that may be why they did things that way. The next day I had horrible bowel pain and constipation. I started taking lots of fiber suppliment, and that’s cleared up, but the bloating is truly horrible. I’m hoping it goes away soon, as I feel very conspicuous. I’m trying to eat well and do a little exercise (30 min each day on ellypitical). I’m going to try taking probiotics and see if that helps, but the ideas presented in this forum make sense to me. It’s supposedly like a burn, and from what I understand, burns often swell. Hopefully it’ll subside quickly.

  41. Sally Says:

I had the thermal balloon procedure done on September 17, 2010.
I have had four children, all vaginally with no pain meds at all through labour and delivery. The first day after the procedure was horrible! I had more pain with this than all 4 labours and deliveries put together. I swore after that, if I had known. About the pain, I wouldn’t have done it.
The next day I was feeling much better and planned to return to work that day.
Three days later I returned to the doctors office because of the discharge and odour, which I found foul. My doctor suspected an infection and placed me on Flagyl, an antibiotic.
The discharge is very annoying. It actually feels like I am urinating. No
bleeding or bloating. But, reading all these posts about the bloating scares me! I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t get that.
After all that said, if my periods slow down at all, it was worth doing it.

  42. Lisa Says:

Hi, had a thermal Baloon ablation for heavy periods 3 days ago- I’m 50. Was very very nervous but my Dr. and the nurses at the hospital made me not want to leave, I was attended to like a Queen (totally opposite than home). Upon waking horrid cramps-like childbirth-but was instantly given pain iv and brought down from 8 to 0. Took Ibuprophen & vicodan for 2 days, only ibuph. today. Like one little blood spot, no discharge, no odor, no yuk, no bloating, no pain. And I have energy. My Dr. said I was moderately anemic and that the ablation will take away fatigue on 3 counts: 1. Physical (less blood less anemia) 2. Psychological (no worry about hemmoraging, losing work & the anxiety that comes with it., & #3, an unknown idiopathic reason that cannot be explained but it just works. So far so good. I hope this keeps up. My advise, take the pain meds, ask for them, don’t read too much on the web and get all upset (which I did) because it probably mostly represents the patients that the results were not good. I’m writing to give you ladies a good report and some optimism – which is uncharacteristic for my life! It may not work for me, only time will tell. Lisa

  43. Christina Says:

Hi everyone, May I say thank you for all of the posts it’s such a wonderful thing to see the results. I had my Novasure on September 1, 2010. My doctor was completely honest with me ahead of time. I suffered from a lot of ovarian cysts and ever since I started menstruation when I was 11 it has always been super heavy. After the birth of my last birth I had tubal ligation (big mistake) I suffered from even heavier cycles that ended me in the ER several times for fainting and becoming anemic after hemorrhaging. I went on BC for 3 years with no luck of slowing down my cycles or stopping the cycts. We were contemplating hysterectomy but my doctor talked about the ablation procedure. She told me exactly what to expect and I have had what she said but some things are different. She told me I would bleed for a couple of days after the procedure, lasted 4 days. Then would be accompanied by watery/red maybe brown discharge. She explained this was due to the “blistering” that takes place. (just like a normal burn blister). She said it could last up to 6 weeks. She told me that my first period would possibly be as heavy as they were before but if the procedure worked after that they should be less. She told me with bloating that if I had bloating after 2 weeks to tell her at our follow up to make sure that the swelling went down. I feel pretty lucky because it did not last long at all. (I forgot to mention I had an ovary removed at the same time) Cramps lasted about 1 week but were far less than the ones I received on my periods. Three days ago during the middle of the day I got a one time spot of light brown. I thought wow maybe this is the start of my first period. I have gotten it every day since then and truly not sure if it is a period or not. I had a couple of very mild cramping last week and normal pms type symptoms but I can’t help but say that it has worked for me so far. After having to quit a job and be on narcotics and large doses of iron. If this is what I am looking at as far as new periods for me. I give it a thumbs up. My doctor said that we have to give it six months to show full results and after a year if it is not fixed we can repeat the procedure. I am going to admit that due to my previous problems I had no sex drive and felt very very dry and yet seemed like my 24 day cycles left me no choice but not to have intercourse at all. I am happy to say that my sex drive is way back and I feel great. Also wanted to note, I have no endometriosis, fibroids or any uterine difficulties. I was said to have a very healthy looking uterus just with thick linings. I am also 35 and in my family we have early menopause which starts around 40. My doctor said the closer to menopause and healthier the uterus the more successful the procedure! Hoping things continue well!!!

  44. Evan Says:

I dont see any other posts from Males here – I have read all the posts above. I just wanted to say think you for everyone that posted – both good and bad. My Wife is looking into gettnig this proceedure done and in reading some of the bad problems I very much fear that with a 10%-20% problem rate (read that somewhere in an other site) there is a fairly large percentage chance of some problem. I do not want that for the woman I love….
SO – for those that did the proceedure and would recommend it, what would you say to accept this proceedure?
for those that did the proceedure and would not recommned recommend it, what would you say to help her decide no…
any and all input/comments/thoughts, etc. is requested.
    thank you,
    Evan

      Hi

I had the procedure August 2005.
      Good points
I’ve had no more than 10 days of light spotting in the last 5 years,
and severe cramps (that I was told for 18 years was due to IBS) have gone totally!
      No PMS

      Bad Side
I’ve also been suffering the pregnant look with weight gain… which my doc said again is due to IBS, after reading this I’m almost certain it’s a side effect. Although it’s not a permenant look, I can have days where i look normal if i eat little and often for a few days.
Would I reccomend it? IF you suffer really badly with periods or cramps then yes, because the pro’s outway the cons.
If you just have prolonged but not heavyperiods or regular spotting or if you are likely to get really down about weight gain and bloating then no.
Good luck i whatever you decide x

Had my EA on Oct 6, 2010. I had the baloon proceedure done. Came through it very well. Didn’t need any pain meds after the proceedure. No cramping, just having clear discharge. I had a couple alien looking things come out, but that’s it. I’m just very tired. The worst was the night before. My OB/GYN gave me medicine to thin out my cervix. Holy cow, contractions every three minutes for three hours. I also had a D&C done before the EA. Keeping my fingers crossed for no problems in thefuture

  46. Marva Says:

I had my EA on Sept 21,2010. the procedure to about 20 min in the doctor office. i was told i could go back to work in 24 hrs ha ha. i slept for about 24 hor afterwards. i had a moderate amount of pain but the pain pills worked wonders. my main problem is i have been experiencing headaches . i usually get a headache before my period by this has be ongoing for about a week. ive had a little spotting to not a real period yet, im keeping my fingers crossed. i hvent experienced the severe bloating. just a little swelling. i cant say if i recommend the procedure yet, need more time.

  47. teresa Says:

For those experiencing bloating, try Benefiber (or something similar). I had ablation done a year ago and discovered that this does wonders for bloating.

  48. sally Says:

I just had an ablation 4 days ago. I’m not bleeding at all, so that makes me happy. However, the cramping the first day was worse than childbirth. I felt a little better the next 2 days, but I’m still tired. Now I have the bloating thing going. Maybe this is all due to the anesthesia and not to the procedure itself. I had a little bit of a complex time because I have a cervical birth defect and I had to do this procedure in the hospital.

  49. Sherry Says:

Haven’t posted in a while because I wanted to give myself time after my procedure. I had the surgery done 5/2010. I still have a period every month, and have some brownish discharge for two weeks every month after each period. I also have been diagnosed with PMDD and have been put on birth control pills to help with the symptoms. I am also dealing with menstrual migraines which I have to take migraine medication for each time I get my period. I have gained 25 lbs since the procedure and I really regret not doing the hysterectomy. Hoping things will settle down with the birth control pills and the migraine meds, but I feel like I’m back at square one in the whole situation. I had a tubal so that I wouldnt have to take birth control and here I am back on it, and still having a period every month! Needless to say I am not a happy customer. ;o( If there is anyone out there further along than a year, with a similar post op history who has had a positive outcome I sure would like to hear from you.
    Sherry

  50. Andree Says:

I had a MEA back in July 2010. to assist me through this proceedure i also had the hormone injection to control the bleeding whilst having it done. I was told after the injection that I would experience weight gain (around 32lb), mood swings etc etc (it basically puts you into the menapause)and that it is all normal. I was already following the slimming world diet to lose a 10lb so i just stuck to this. I had an awful time with this injection, felt dreadful but thanks to SW I only gained 7lb. The operation was straight forward, but I had awful bloating/gas for weeks after.
The awful depressed feeling I had dragged on and on and I visited a large chemist and had a chat with the pharmisist. He explained that the injection lasts around 6-8 months and then you should start to feel better, and he was right. Taking evening primrose oil or anything that you think may help the symptoms will not, they only make it worse.
The past month the weight has started to drop off me again (2-3LB a week) and i have lost the weight i gained and on my way to losing the stone i had originally wanted to lose. I feel much better in myself and my periods are just a small brownish discharge for a couple of days a month. I do still suffer with the odd nasty boil on my skin, but not the acne I used to have (at 43!)
I did question whether it had been worth it too as the problems seem to drag on. But I think it was as i was suffering dreadfully with my periods before and i am not drained for 2 weeks of the month now!
Maybe you should visit your gp and run through things with him or ask to see your consultant to have things clarified.
    good luck!

    • Amy Says:

      Hi all,
I’m posting because I had a hysteroscopic EA with a roller ball and I was very pleased with the results, in that it stopped the horrible bleeding I was experiencing. (I posted long descriptions earlier in this blog) – HOWEVER- I subsequently (4-6 years? I don’t even remember anymore!) had a laparoscopic myomectomy because of other symptoms – and I just want to add that I really wish I had just had the laparoscopic surgery from the beginning! Instead, I ended up trying all kinds of other measures because I was afraid, couldn’t make up my mind, wanted something less invasive, etc., etc, etc. And I ended up doing the EA because by then the wait for the laparoscopic surgery was too long and I was bleeding so much I couldn’t think straight (that doesn’t help with decision making either!)
In retrospect, while the EA did it’s job, I wish I had just gone a head with the laparoscopic surgery from the start. It just feels so very good to have them completely out of my system. All my complaints have been resolved and I healed beautifully. Sure, I have 3 tiny half inch and one inch long scars, but I don’t even think about them any more, and they are fading. In the scheme of things they are nothing – and I don’t regret the surgery at all – I just wish I’d had it 10 years ago!
The problem with vascillating so much is that then other things also get in the way: It’s not a good time, I’m too busy, then I got laid off, blah, blah, blah – It took me forever! And don’t forget, during that time they can continue to grow and cause more problems and make it harder to remove them… you could even end up with a hysterectomy.
So, essentially, if you are on the fence, just find a good doctor and go for it! (I saw Dr. Brill in San Francisco.)
My best to all of you!
