I sense that some of you get a little nervous about pre-op testing so here’s some information. I’ll start with a quote from Lab Tests Online that provides a guide on test preparation:
One of the most important factors in determining the accuracy and reliability of your lab test is you, the patient. After all, it is a sample from your body (blood, urine, or some other specimen) on which the test will be performed. Therefore, it is essential that you do the following to ensure that the results will be useful:
Your preparation can be spiritual, or funny, or just ways you are pampering yourself. Name your treatment option and tell what you are doing to prepare.

Received an email request from Tina (1/24) about a specific list of what to carry to the hospital when going in for fibroid surgery. Thanks for the great suggestion!
I’ll start with a quote from the post that listed what I carried. Remember, I had a Uterine Fibroid Embolization and only stayed overnight.
I have polls set up on my “geek with fibroids” web site. If you visit the home page, you’ll find these three questions in the right sidebar:
After voting, you can view the results on the Poll page.
Visit the site, take the online polls, and express your opinions.

Received an email message from Gwyn who wanted a forum about trying to conceive after an Abdominal Myomectomy. Thanks for the suggestion!
Fibroid free left a detailed comment (one of her “novelettes”) in the “fertility and fibroids” forum a few months ago. Here is an excerpt:
fibroid free: Started with a new GYN – explained my symptons and she said sounds like fibroids and ordered an MRI and recommended me to a OB/GYN RE. Never even thought about a RE (GYN who specializes in Reproductive Endocrinology otherwise know a Fertility Doctor) but ended up to be the best choice of doctor. Went to see her and poured out my want to still have children. She told me about the AM and we scheduled surgery onyl to have her call me and admit she did not have the skill level needed to assure removal of fibroids without a hysto and could not guarentee fertility ( no doctor can guarentee but she was not the one to do the surgery) .. SHE refered me to the FERTILITY DOCTOR. Sigh I thought at first….never expected to be in this position…… and so we set up an appointment. Read the rest of this entry »
Had a couple of recent visitors searching for information because they have loved ones with health problems. I appreciate every visit to this blog but to those who visit and comment on behalf of someone else, I extend special thanks. Support from family and friends helped me immeasurably during my fibroid journey.
If you know someone dealing with uterine fibroids, leave your questions, concerns, or thoughts here.

The original post-AM recovery forum became so full of comments (640!) that I decided to create a new thread to make it easier for future visits. Please see the original “How are you feeling after your Abdominal Myomectomy?” for more experiences.
[Edited to add: I thanked Country Girl (1/16) in the original forum but forgot to say something here. Thanks for the great suggestion of starting post-AM (part 2)!

Many women are following this fibroid treatment option so I decided to set up a separate thread for discussion. From the MayoClinic.com Uterine Fibroids Decision Guide:
Watchful Waiting
Your doctor will look for signs of rapid fibroid growth or interference with nearby structures such as your bladder or intestines.
Report to your doctor any new signs and symptoms that could signal problems, including heavy menstrual bleeding, back or pelvic pain, urinary frequency or constipation.
One of the symptoms of uterine fibroids is very heavy bleeding. A recent visitor wondered about managing the heavy days:
susie Q: i wondered if folks have any ‘tricks of the trade’ around managing the bleeding and heavy days. i feel shy to ask about this part of it all, but wonder if folks have ideas i might not have thought about – beyond towel rags, pads etc… anyway, if folks have inventions or ideas….

Received an email request for a thread on post-Abdominal Myomectomy questions to ask during a follow-up visit. I have a previous post that list questions to ask a fibroid doctor but most of those deal with information you need pre-op. I’ll tweak a few from that post and stick them here for you to ask post-op: Read the rest of this entry »
