Anne Cagle: I’m having an exploratory hysteroscopy next week. Can anyone share their experience with the procedure with me? I am very nervous.

Hysteroscopy is a diagnostic and surgical procedure that makes examining the inside of the uterus possible without making an abdominal cut (incision). During hysteroscopy, a lighted viewing instrument called a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix and into the uterus. Treatment can also be done through the hysteroscope during the same procedure.
Hysteroscopy usually takes 30 to 45 minutes and is done as an outpatient procedure. General anesthesia is usually used, although local or spinal anesthesia can be used instead. You should not eat or drink for at least 4 to 8 hours before having the test. A gynecologist or surgeon performs the procedure.
The uterus is filled with a fluid, such as normal saline or glycine. The hysteroscope is inserted through the cervix into the uterus so the inner surface of the uterus can be examined. Hysteroscopy can locate the cause of bleeding for many women.

My experience occurred during a hysteroscopic myomectomy. It was outpatient, under general anesthesia, and caused very little pain. The doctor inserted the camera to see the fibroids that needed to be “shaved” down. I was nervous about the procedure, especially the general anesthesia part. Hi everyone. My name is bri. I had an hysteroscopy on march 16-2015 due to ten yr of have abnormal bleeding and heavy painful period. My surgery. Your pre op apt the anesthesia. Call u a week ahead saying the nite b for u. Couldn’t. Eat after Midnight. My apt Was at 8:30. Went smooth. First u check. N an hour early. Then u waited for a nurse to come get u n take u to the room. U changed clothes to a gown. Nurse come bk n ask question bout medical history. Then they started an iv. N your arm. Like 15min later the anesthesiologist come n talk to i was his part is during the surgery. Then your dr. That performing the surgery. Come n in talk to u. Finally the anesthesia. Come n n put the med thru iv. To knock u out. Meaning general. Anesthesia. All i remember. Was them wheeling. Me n stretcher. To the operating. Room n i help them Get me on the o r table n i was out. Then i woke. Up in the recovery.Room i was still drowsy. From anesthesia. Meds. Nurse was buy my side watching. My breathing. Once she saw o was awake. I told her I’m. Hungry n thirsty brought me Graham. Cracker n ice water. Sat there til i felt pretty stable she walk with me to the bathroom. N i walked around for five min alone to shower her i was stable. They. Dr showed me what they removed which was two polyps.. On a paper the videod. N the operating. Room. They sent me home with pain meds. Once the anesthesia. Wear off u should feel light discomfort. N mild cramping. When i got home i slept. All day woke up ate then went to sleep. U will have a water discharge. N spotting so u will need on a pad. I take tylenol. For my cramps. It not no period it just spotting. So far it march 17 2015 at 340 am . i feel good. Just cramping. No pain. My whole procedure took 2hr. N a half hour total from surgery n the recovery room. It went all good. No complaint glad it over. N hopefully. My period will b bk. To normal again. I’ll. Update next month.
